About Us
who we are:
This year marks the 40th anniversary of New York State Teacher Centers! Over the past four decades, our organization has made tremendous strides, and we will continue to evolve and expand to meet the needs of our ever-changing student population.
With 124 Teacher Centers across New York State, we provide thousands of professional learning opportunities, programs, and support to over 275,000 educators statewide.
NYS Teacher Centers are at the forefront of educational reform, acting as an approved provider by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) for Next Generation Learning Standards training. In the past four years, we have offered more than 54,000 programs directly related to these Learning Standards.
The NYSTC Network services over 600 PK-12 public schools districts and nearly 1000 non-public and charter schools; servicing more than 275,000 educators!
How we began:
In 1984, the lobbying efforts of NYSUT led to the establishment and funding of Teacher Resource and Computer Training Centers (now known as NYS Teacher Centers) by the New York State Legislature under Education Law 316. This law mandated the provision of systematic, ongoing professional education services for teachers across New York State. It introduced an innovative approach to professional learning and fostered a unique partnership between Teacher Centers and schools. That inaugural year saw the opening of 44 Teacher Centers.
Each Teacher Center has its own distinct origins and characteristics. Their organizational structures, programs, and services are designed to align with the standards for professional development. While not all Teacher Centers operate in the same manner, each is governed by a Policy Board composed of representatives from the Center’s district(s), including teachers, administrators, parents, higher education representatives, business leaders, and community members. Notably, at least 51% of the Policy Board must be teachers, ensuring that our programs are tailored to meet the local professional learning needs of classroom educators.
