Safe & Supportive Schools
Professional development and/or support for the creation and maintenance of safe, secure, supportive and inclusive learning environments for all students.
NYS Teacher Centers are dedicated to helping teachers create safe and supportive learning environments for ALL students. One aspect of this is by educating teachers and support staff on social and emotional learning. Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions; set and achieve positive goals; feel and show empathy for others; establish and maintain positive relationships; and make responsible decisions. SEL is a deeply ingrained part of the way students and adults interact both in the classroom and out of it, and helps provide children with equitable, supportive, and welcoming learning environments. For more information on SEL, please visit casel.org.
To educate our teachers, NYS Teacher Centers offer a variety of professional learning opportunities. These include:
Book studies based on the work of Dr. Ross Greene (Lost at School and Lost and Found)
Webinars on Social Emotional Learning, impacts of remote learning, digital safety and trauma informed instructional strategies
In-depth online courses on Social Emotional Learning in a remote environment
Others based on identified needs
